Mentalism Notes by Dan Alex

This is a new handbook written by Dan Alex.
He wanted to put together three effects of mentalism modern izzati and make it feasible nowadays.
You will find these three routines useful to carry in your show.

No More Force
Effect:
The mentalist shows a deck of 52 playing cards, he does cut the deck several times in front of the spectator. At this point the mentalist does stop at any point of the deck of cards and keeps storing a card in mind, all the while the mentalist will not look at anything and is not always looking at the deck. He completes cutting and lays the deck away from him. The mentalist will always know which card the spectator is thinking of.

Telephone Number Prediction
Effect:
The mentalist shows a telephone directory, and invites a spectator to open any page and tear it out. Then, he asks the spectator to cut it into eight pieces and underline only one number on each piece. Once he is done the spectator is asked to make a paper ball with every piece of paper. The spectator mixes them and chooses one. At this point the mentalist writes down a phone number on another piece of paper and once finished it is the exact number written on the little piece of paper the spectator has chosen randomly.

New Test Dead or Alive
Effect:
The mentalist shows five pieces of paper, gives the first sheet to the spectator and asks him to write on it the name of a dead person. While the remaining four sheets are given to four other spectators that will write four names of living people. Now he invites the spectators to mix the pieces of paper, then takes the names and says that he cannot know who died between five sheets. The papers are given to a spectator, and he is asked to spread them on the table face down. While the mentalist writes a prediction on another sheet and places it face down on the table. At this point with the help of the pendulum, and having the sheets face down, the magician separates those that he thinks are living people. That done, the magician shows a glass of water and says that thanks to the life force of the water he will be able to show who is the person that died. He immerses the papers in the water and the one that comes out completely dry is the person who has died, and the living people come out completely wet. The magician then shows his prediction is correct that has remained on the table the whole time.

These are effects that could give a hint of more mystery in your mentalism show.

What To Do When You Fail An Effect- Get advice from a pro as he talks about what to do when you fail an effect. This is something that every magician should know!

Sync is the perfect method for guessing a name completely prop-less.

Fraser Parker recently went back to his notebooks to an older idea of his for guessing a name without the spectator ever having to say a word and after a few days of playing with scripting all of the pieces of the jigsaw finally fell into place.

It is now possible to guess any name or word thought of by the spectator without them ever having to name letters or words associated with letters from the name - in fact, they can stay completely silent throughout the entire process.

The method itself is pure simplicity and is possibly the most elegant solution ever worked out for a prop-less name guess. It makes what was previously thought of as impossible, child's play.

You say a few lines of scripting to the spectator and from that moment on can perceive which letters the spectator thinks of with no guess work whatsoever.

The script is exactly as it would be if you were doing this for real with no trick yet you are able to discern which letters the spectator is thinking and subsequently guess any name or word thought of.

NO stooges or instant stooges. It can be performed one on one or in front of larger groups.

This is a prop-less utility that can be used to guess literally anything.

Hologram is just amaaaaaazing!

The spectator freely chooses a card that is "marked" on the back with a yellow sticker. You clearly lose the card in the deck and shuffle. Then you explain that you are going to make the card appear on the top... and thanks to the sticker, everyone will see it!

Indeed, with no suspicious movement, the sticker seems to gradually appear on the top of the deck! It even looks like a hologram, as if it was unreal. The only problem is... the sticker appeared in red! Whatever, you just snap your fingers and the sticker turns into yellow! It changes color instantly and on demand! And to prove that this is the same card as earlier, you immediately give it for examination!

The routine:
Take out eight cards each showing one important life value, such as 'health','love' or 'happiness'. Ask your participant to define her personal order of these life values by placing the cards face down in front of her in a line defining her personal priority list. The backs of the cards have no writing at all and are grey so that no-one can see through.
Explain her that there are thousands of possible ways to sort these life values and that virtually every one has a different priority regarding life values. This can be interpreted as someone's personal character key that makes them unique.
Then take your participant into a small story and reveal some of her character traits through cold reading or palm reading. Finally reveal her exact priority list of life values - 100% spot on.

Chewing gum is a basic prop that has been used by most magicians as a trick and will continue to be used in the present. Finix Chan has come out with this visual wonder involving a sealed pack of gum. With the blessing and permission from Alan Rorrison, we are proud to present to you "Uncaged".

Imagine this, you will present two sealed packs of gum to the spectator and then ask he or she to select one between them. The chosen pack of gum will be kept in the spectator's back pocket. Then, the switch is visually happening in front of the spectator's eye with gentle rubs on the gum pack. Now, the spectator is asked to take out the pack of gum from their back pocket. What the spectator will find out is the packs of gum have been swapped. The trick looks so simple, but the effect hasn't ended yet. Just before the spectator can digest this impossible moment; the next level of the switch is completed by the magician doing some magical gesture. It also switched the gum sticks inside those gum packs which were completely sealed the whole time. The best part? Everything can be handed out right away for examination.

Who is he?
Michael Finney is a multi-award winning comedy magician with more than 35 years in the business.

After spending part of his early career as a close-up magician and a children's performer at a theme park, Finney decided to concentrate strictly on comedy magic and has since performed around the world – including at the 2004 Inaugural Gala for President George W. Bush, and London’s famed Palladium Theater.

He was a comedy finalist on Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon, and was a regular performer on NBC’s World’s Greatest Magicians and World’s Wildest Magic Shows.

Michael received the Silver Lion's Head award from Seigfried and Roy for excellence in comedy and magic performance.  Soon after, he was awarded Comedy Magician of the Year and Parlor Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts, The Magic Castle in Los Angeles, voted one of the top 10 comedy magicians in the world  by his peers in 2008. In 2009, Michael received the world comedy magic act of the year presented to him by Gay Blackstone.

Tell Monte by John Hostler

This ebook came through our inbox and impressed us all greatly. It's an example of someone who has thought through an idea completely, worked out every kink, and developed a non-card effect that will KILL in a close-up environment. You can read the first five pages for free here, so you have a taste of what you'll be learning.

The effect is this: you lay out five readily available objects from yourself and the audience: a wristwatch, cell phone, folded dollar bill, keys, and a wedding ring. Then you lay out 5 ESP cards in another row. You turn away and ask the spectator to mix the cards and then deal them out in a row next to the objects. After a mixing procedure (still with your back turned) you are able to divine the thought-of ESP symbol, and the object closest to it.

John Hostler writes exceedingly well, and his booklet goes into great detail about his influences, from Bob Hummer to Paul Curry. This is a terrific idea and a thoughtful non-card routine. That is RARE in today's marketplace, and worth studying.

The Lottery by Chris Bolter

The Lottery is a full performance routine captivating the spirit and essence of Shirley Jackson's famous short story from the nineteen forties. Five lottery contestants are chosen from the audience. After a brief synopsis of the Lottery story a small black bag is introduced. Which contains four shiny white stones and one dark black stone. The bag is shaken up and each contestant reaches their hand inside removing either a white stone or the winning "black rock".

Once everyone has an item in their hands. The performer attempts to divine which one does in fact have the winning lottery ball. Through a humorous series of questions and answers slowly the participants are eliminated until only two are left. One of these two people has the winning lottery stone, which can only mean a sure and certain death by stoning!Of course the winner is appropriately predicted and they are of course left unharmed, but they've learned that some lotteries are not always rewarded with money.. but death!

As a kicker ending, the performer opens a small envelope that has been in view on the table. Inside it reads exactly who the winner of the lottery will be!
