He begins with a bet and a prediction, and involves the whole audience helping to narrow down an imaginary deck of cards to only one. Although his prediction card in the envelope is off by one, Alan is right on the money as he proves he knew that would be the case.

Then a real deck is cut into four piles, and shuffled by four people, yet each pile is found to have one of the aces on its bottom. It's a clever method.

Next, Alan uses his pocket calendar which has a different card listed for each day. After someone chooses a date and notes the card there... he shows that it is the one card missing from the deck... and, just for good measure, he also has exactly that card in a prediction envelope.

Then, he teaches his way of handling a seldom-seen effect. In his version, any card at all is named, and that card is discovered inside an egg.

Finally, he makes selected cards rise from the deck in increasingly impossible ways, until at last, the entire deck explodes in a fountain. Alan's ingenious set-up for this is portable, allowing you to perform a spectacular card fountain without any assistants or visible mechanisms.

Jerome Finley - Natural Mediumship

Natural Mediumship contains some VERY potent information. I feel the desire to let the curious know if your looking for a book on how to fake Spirit contact, this probably isn't it. I say probably, because while utilising these techniques allows you to commune with the departed in a realistic manner without actual need for the spirits of the deceased to exist, the contact is genuine. Are you familiar with creating reality tunnels and shifting belief systems? My mind boggles at combining this with the Spiritualist Mind Reading System and Medium Rare.

I have an uncle who is a minister, and part of his job involves working funerals laying spirits to rest and giving solace to the living. He is also called to visit hospitals to attend to the sick offering blessings and healing prayers. I have a lot of respect for the work he does. I feel it's a necessary vital role in any community, and yet I always felt it was too limiting to work from within a single paradigm. I prefer the freedom of shifting beliefs, as this allows you to work with virtually anyone's spiritual overview without compromising your own or imposing on theirs. As Chaos Magician Peter Carroll once said, "Belief itself is only a tool for achieving effects; it is not an end in itself."

This also brings me to an important fact, which is so obvious I hesitate to even mention it. If you have an issue with talking to the dead, you can simply reframe everything in this book to whatever your heart desires and/or artistic vision imagines. Mind Readers communicating with anthropomorphic submodalities, tapping into the Spiritus Mundi, or connecting a nature lover with the Genus Loci of their favorite park. Labeling and interacting with non-physical reality within performance offers so many potentials your imagination, or anothers borrowed, is very much the limit.

This work is so specialised into the emerging genre of Psycho-Spiritual Mentalism I don't wish to go into specifics of the various pieces it contains. Reviewing one of Jeromes books I can't ever seem to find a place to put the awesome trick ratings, though he deserves a gold star Smile . I trust I shared enough of what I absorbed that those who can work this material find it and give it a good home.

ParaLabs - Sense and Meaning

I'm going to post this in a few spots as I don't want anyone to miss what I think is one of the best books out in a long time. Knowing most mentalists spend most of their time here....

I recently received (as a gift) a copy of the lecture notes that Ranier Mees and Thomas Heine sold after their lecture at PSYCRETS 2012. Calling these lecture notes, or even a booklet, doesn’t do “Sense And Meaning” justice.

97 pages long and obviously a lot of time and expense went into the layout, cover and binding. It is a very nice looking book, in keeping in style with their earlier releases.

Of course a books value shouldn’t be judged by its length or looks but by its content. And as we’ve come to expect from the men from ParaLabs, this is content of the highest quality !

Obviously Ranier and Thomas explore the implications of sense and meaning in mentalism. They share their ideas on creating emotionally vibrant experiences via their “sequences.” Sequence is what most of us would call an effect/trick/experiment/feat but their term is very appealing to me.

Ranier and Thomas know quite a bit about language and how the brain functions and consistently work this knowledge into their sequences. Their applications for applying evidence of a particular kind of brain functioning to selecting the best participant are stunning. This isn’t a linear “are you creative or logical” but something far more subtle.

In their hands, language becomes a method in itself. While there are some similarities this is different from Kenton Kneppers work in this area.

They share their “targets” for presentation which are essentially the themes they apply to each sequence. One sequence might tap into self-awareness, another into astonishment while yet another deals with dismay and consternation.

Don’t worry, your audiences won’t leave dismayed; the target is a means to a positive ending (if that is what you want). Each target is explored in detail including effects that illustrate its theme.

My favorite part of the book is what Ranier and Thomas call ParaLogue and is their opening sequence. Considering they still regularly use this, I’m shocked they were so generous to include it in so much detail.

Obviously I can’t tip it but the impact on the audience is that they are hearing your thoughts in their minds. No props, appropriate for audiences from 1 to 1000 and all the other “bathing suit” clichés are absolutely true here.

ParaLogue is perfect for many venues and purposes. It is a true “mentalistic” opener (as they like to call some of their work) but by no means is resticted to this position. When I read the denouement, I was grinning from ear to ear. It is actually a 2 tiered conclusion, the second taking a powerful and unexpected turn from the first. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Thomas and Ranier!

The Magic Shard Tree is taught in detail. I believe this is in Neal Scryer and Friends as well. I don’t know if there are any differences but readers of that book know the strength and intimacy that Thomas and Ranier evoke in their work.

There is a bonus section titled “Rashomon Readings.” Another brilliant sequence, this time allowing you to incorporate methods we associate with the Hoy Book Test, to reading the minds of audience members.

I don’t want to go on about each and every effect (though I’m pretty close ). The greatest value in Sense And Meaning isn’t the individual effects (as near perfect as they may be) but the ways of thinking Ranier and Thomas teach us.

The unique talents of these two gentlemen has been more and more evident with each item and book they’ve released. Inside Sense And Meaning, everything comes together and provides knowledge and inspiration that we can all benefit from. Bravo, Thomas and Ranier!

A spectator holds a number of fingers behind their back, and the mentalist does likewise. The spectator is to hold out as many fingers as their number when they hear it called out, but to keep that number hidden at all times. Naturally, the mentalist brings out his hand and is showing the same number of fingers held up as the spectator is holding behind their back.
A variation is when the mentalist plays "Rock, Paper, Scissors" and always wins...with the spectator hiding their choice behind their back!
That's right, a spectator can hold any number of fingers behind their back, or do Rock, Paper, Scissors, and the mentalist will ALWAYS KNOW.
