Our friend Justin Higham has written several books about improvisation specifically in the realm of card magic such as Secrets of Improvisational Magic and The KOSBE System. The 75% Production and The Trick With No Method is his brand new booklet of ideas and methods detailing how to put his theories into practice.

The booklet explores ways to produce four of a kind from a genuinely shuffled deck without relying on culling (including shuffle-culling) or excessive use of memorisation or calculation. Unlike the deliberate, linear methods which, almost by definition, involve ‘brute force’ (manual or mental), Justin's approach involves letting the cards ‘decide’ what to do and how/when to do it.

But don't confuse this as simply a dissertation on four-of-a-kind productions. It is instead a lesson in improvisational mindset used to create them. The 75% Production is a form of ‘trick with no method’, in as much as a key element of the method (without which an effect may not be solved or reconstructed) is missing.

Psychic Money Sense by Devin Knight

Give a spectator psychic intuition! The magician shows three small coin envelopes. On the front of each envelope is attached a different coin. One envelope has a penny attached to the front, another has a nickel, and finally the last envelope has a dime. 

The magician says he has made a written prediction and points to it. It is on the table in full view. The coins on the envelopes serve to influence the spectator's intuition. He says he hopes the spectator's intuition will match his prediction. 

On the table, with the envelopes are three matching coins. A spectator is asked to place each coin onto an envelope, next to the attached coin. The only thing is that he can't put the same coin next to a matching coin on the envelope. In other words, if a nickel is attached to the envelope, he has to put either the penny or dime next to it. The spectator is told to use his intuition to determine which coin the magician wants him to place onto each envelope. (Even though he doesn't know yet what the magician's prediction is. He has to use his intuition.) 

After the spectator, has done this, the magician gives him a chance to change his mind and put the three coins on different envelopes if he wishes. The spectator has a free choice of which coin to place on each envelope, provided it is not a matching coin. There is no forcing or magician's choice of any kind. 

Once the spectator is happy with his final choice, he picks up each coin and puts it inside the envelope. The spectator does this, the magician does not touch the coins or envelopes at any time, eliminating the idea of sleights or coin switches. 

The magician says that inside each envelope he placed a hidden coin beforehand. He tells the spectator since there are three coins; a set consists of all three coins, the penny, nickel and dime. He says if the spectator used his intuition and put the CORRECT coin into an envelope, then the coin attached to the envelope and the two inside will make a perfect set. In other words, if the coin attached to the envelope is a nickel, then the two on the inside will be a penny and a dime. 

This would be a coincidence, if he formed a set. The magician shows the prediction and reads it, it says: I predict using your intuition, that you will have created three sets. 

The spectator (not the magician) then opens each envelope and dumps out the contents. Amazingly, using his intuition, he has put the correct coin into each envelope needed to make a set. Each envelope contains a penny, nickel and dime. This is an amazing feat in itself. Had the spectator placed a different coin into the envelope, which he could have, then there would not be a set of three different coins. Must have been psychic intuition! 

Not only has the spectator done an amazing coincidence, but the magician has correctly predicted the spectator's actions beforehand. 

Believe it or not, this is a 100% hands-off effect. The magician just directs from a distance, with the spectator doing everything. This is close-up mentalism that is a real fooler and requires no skill or sleights. This is so easy to do that you will amaze yourself. 

This is a self-working effect that uses no gimmicks. Both the envelope and the coins are ungimmicked. Everything can be examined at the end.

Here's what you'll learn:

Earthquake: One spectator picks a card, and another merely thinks of a card. After hilariously entertaining banter, Dani uses vibrations to find both the selected card and thought-of card.

Two Piles: The spectator freely selects any card from the deck and places it back. The magician then attempts to find the card by going through the deck and pulling out a number of possible cards. The spectator shuffles the remaining cards and pulls out a small packet. Simply by looking at the spectator, the magician narrows down the possible selections to just a single card, the chosen card. Now the magician reveals a miracle. The randomly selected chosen packet consists of the entire suit of the selected card in numerical order.

ACAAN (Any Card At Any Number): One spectator selects a card and loses it back in the deck. Another spectator thinks of a number. Without missing a beat, the spectator counts down to that number and finds his selected card. It's the classic routine in the style that only Dani can deliver.

Impromptu Exact Force: A spectator chooses any four cards and they are placed on the table. The magician then starts creating four piles by asking a spectator to take a packet, or dealing down and asking them to say stop. When the original four cards are revealed to be nothing more than cards, it seems like the magician has made a mistake. But when the number of cards in each packet matches precisely the number of cards in each pile, spectators can't help but drop their jaws.

Illogical Conclusion: The effect begins with four unseen cards face down on the table and four red cards in Rafael's hands. He openly switches a card, then two cards, and then three cards from one pile to the other, all while the cards in his hands remain completely red. The trick doesn't seem to make sense until he finally shows that the cards on the table are all black.

"You'll always have it on you, ready to go!"

Ask your spectators if they know about QR-CODES.
Then take a key ring from your pocket and pass it around calling attention to the QR-CODE tag attached to it.
Explain that the code is a prediction!

Using either your own smartphone or a spectator's, you scan the QR-CODE! A beep is heard and a card appears on the screen of the phone - the five of hearts, for example.

In a few seconds, your spectator will choose a card and place it face down on the table without looking at it.
Admit that if the spectator chooses the five of hearts, your prediction will be 100% correct and all will be perfect.

Take out an ordinary deck of card and have it shuffled. The spectator then selects a card and places it face down on the table.

The situation is simple...
Your prediction (the keyring with its tag) has been on the table since the beginning.
The spectator's card is right next to it.

Now invite the spectator to turn his card face up.

Unfortunately, it's not the five of hearts, but rather the jack of clubs, for example.

Your spectators will start to give you grief; your trick seems to have failed.
Well, he who laughs last, laughs best, as they say. You invite your spectator to scan the QR-CODE again.
As soon as a beep is heard an image appears... a CARD... the jack of clubs!
The card chosen by the spectator! How is this possible?
It's the same keyring and the same QR-CODE as before!

Even though your spectator is already blown away, you explain that this QR-CODE has the strange property of being able to divine ANY card chosen at ANY time WITHOUT FAIL!

You don't believe it?

Explain that if you had chosen another card, the QR-CODE would have divined it immediately as well.
As you speak, you turn over the top card of the deck, the ace of hearts, for example.
Scan once again the same keyring tag, the same QR-CODE.
Once again, a beep is heard and the image of the ace of hearts appears!
How is this possible? The keyring, the deck of cards - everything is ordinary however...

Offer to repeat the experiment again and again. Each time, the QR-CODE will correctly display the chosen card without fail.
You'll be able to present this experiment all evening long with a different prediction each time. You will always have it on you to use for your keys as well as for an anytime trick for any audience whenever you wish!

Even though it's completely examinable, QR-CODE will not give away its secret!
It seems impossible, crazy even... and yet, absolutely true!

A spectator chooses a card from the deck. The deck is cut into four separate piles, with some piles face up. Each pile is shuffled into each other, face up and face down. The spectator hasn't put their card back in the deck, but the magician asks for the suit of their card. The spectator names the suit, the magician spreads the cards, and it is revealed that all the cards of that suit are in order, Ace through King, with one card missing (the selected card).

MOOL is a name guess from my notebooks I would like to share that is one hundred percent mechanical and uses a standard deck of cards to enable you to guess any thought of name or word with complete accuracy.

What is beautiful about this particular solution is the cards never seem to be directly in play to the rest of the audience.

The participant as well as everyone watching is fooled with no idea how you were able to guess their thought.

It looks as if you simply give a reading based on general characteristics and traits the spectator gives to you about a thought of person and you are then able to instantly reveal that person's name.

If you use cards in your set already with proper justification, as to not appear to be a mere trickster and can perform in a way that makes you appear credible, then you will want this method in your repertoire.

You are able to secretly get as many letters of the name or word as you feel you need to nail the exact thought of name, meaning there is very little actual guess work, if any!

NO writing anything down. NO re-frame. NO long drawn out process. Easy to perform.

Everything looks natural and as it would if you were performing this for real.
