Separation Anxiety by Watkins

This routine is an excerpt from Watkins limited edition hardbound book, "Positive / Negative".

With the techniques you learn in this manuscript you will be able to 'steal' a random strangers Bank PIN from their mind. They will have absolutely no memory of their code.

You will then 'put the thought back in their head' by revealing the PIN, ultimately proving your ability to pluck a thought from someones mind!

This routine is a perfect introduction to hypnosis, as there are fail-safe 'outs' throughout every step of the performance!

This kind of effect ought to be used with caution and care, as it can be misused in the wrong hands. Perform responsibly!

EFFECT: An audience member is chosen and brought up to the stage. The Mentalist is seen to put her into a trance. Her eyes close and her head bows forward and the Performer begins to instruct her:

“I want you to imagine you are walking down an empty street at night. Up ahead you will see an ATM. I want you to go up to that ATM and imagine punching in a four digit PIN code. After you have punched this code into the machine, I want you to imagine deleting the number. To the point where it no longer exists in your mind, to the point where if I were to ask you what this PIN was you would not be able to answer me. Nod your head when you understand that. Because the only way I will be able to pick up on this thought is if it vanishes from your mind completely so it can appear in my mind. Nod your head when it has completely vanished from your mind”

The Performer writes something down on a clipboard. He puts the clipboard down on a table and brings the participant out of her trance.

He asks her what her PIN code was and she is seen to have actually forgotten it! The Performer explains to the audience:

“You see, a lot of people ask me if I can guess a person’s bank account information but that is not enough! If I can effectively steal the information from a person’s mind it leaves them in a very bad position as she can no longer go to a bank and confirm her bank info, nor can she stop me from taking her money. However, I am not an unethical person so let me just remind her what this PIN was”

The Performer touches the participant on the head and she can now remember her PIN code and reveals it out loud. The Performer turns over the clipboard he wrote on earlier and proves that he did in fact steal the PIN from her mind.

The performer borrows a deck of cards and has the spectator thoroughly shuffle the deck. The performer then makes a prediction by placing a single playing card face up on the table so it's face can be seen right from the start of the effect, let's say it's the five of clubs.

The deck is then handed face down to the spectator who is instructed to start dealing cards from the top of the deck onto the table by turning each card face up.

At any time the spectator can stop on any card and without turning it over deals it face down on the table next to the face up prediction made moments ago.

The spectator may now keep dealing cards face up if they desire to prove there are no duplicates.

When the face down card dealt by the spectator is flipped over it is seen to be the five of spades and matches the predicted five of clubs perfectly!

The deck is now handed back. It's normal. Nothing was added or taken away and the trick can be repeated instantly!

Read all of that again because every word is a true description of "The Open Prediction" by Matt Johnson!

Carbone: Two Jokers are examined and placed on a card box. The spectator selects any card and it's lost back in the pack. The magician now takes the two Jokers and visually produces the selection from between them.

Coin Thing: Patrick teaches a utility coin move that allows you to stealthily shoot a coin from one hand to another. Patrick teaches this in the guise of a Coins Across routine.

The Modern Biddle: Patrick's variation on the Biddle trick. The spectator chooses a card and loses it back in the pack. The magician then clearly fans out 5 possible selected cards, and takes a photo of it. The magician magically moves the selected card back into the deck. Not only are there only 4 cards left in the packet, but the photo just taken also only shows 4 cards! This trick alone is worth the price of admission!

InstaGrab: The spectator names a card. The magician BORROWS a spectator's phone and shows him his Instagram page and a picture of a folded-up card. He then slides and pulls the Instagram picture right into his hands, revealing it to be the spectators named card!

Odd Man Out: The magician reveals a blue-backed prediction card in his pocket, and claims that he will force the spectator to select the odd card. The spectator selects a card from a red-backed deck, but it does not match the magician's prediction. The magician now reveals that the entire deck is all the same card as the prediction, the prediction card is no longer blue-backed, AND the spectator's chosen card is now blue. The spectator's card really is the odd man out!

Halo Project: A visual linking ring effect done with a borrowed ring. Using a borrowed ring puts this in the miracle class!

The scenario is as follows. You approach a group of people, or an individual, holding a small note pad and a Sharpie marker. You then say that you will vanish the note pad. On a count to of three, the Sharpie marker appears on your ear. Whilst you take the Sharpie to go and tap on the note pad again, the note pad has visually changed into a pack of cards right in front of their eyes.

The scenario is as follows. You approach a group of people or an individual, holding a note pad. You then proceed to ask them if they are ready to place their order, if they say no, you then say something like, that's ok, how about a card trick instead. The notepad turns into a pack of cards right in front of their eyes.

You can use this in any scenario, restaurants, corporate functions, bars, parties. It is limited to your own imagination.

You can even write on the gimmick, so you can use it for example at the beginning of your invisible deck routine. You ask a spectator to name any card. You write it on the Noted gimmick.
